Golden Obsidian forms when hot lava quickly cools down from coming in contact with water.  This leaves a nice shimering golden hue to the glass like black stone.  It is considered to be a stone of protection and acts as a shield against negativity.
 
In the early 13th century, Incas used Obsidian to construct weapons, mirrors, masks and jewelry.   The Mayans once carved idols of their god Tetzcatlipoca from this veritable black beauty.  Incidentally, the name Tetzcatlipoca means "shining mirror," so Obsidian was likely chosen to mimic the god's attributes.  The Mayans also used polished Obsidian as a divining tool they called "magic mirrors".
