“Laguna Escapades” was created on a last-minute whim to complement an outfit I was wearing to Laguna Beach, California.  Handcrafted using two gemstones, Malachite and Lapis Lazuli, both having deep historic roots.  
 
Ancient Egyptians, around 4,000 BC, used malachite as an ornamental stone in jewelry and art. Archeologists have found Egyptian tomb paintings using malachite gemstones that had been ground into paint that colored the walls. It was also ground into a fine dust and mixed with a thick paste to be painted onto eyelids as a cosmetic and talisman against evil. Vivid green malachite kohl is believed to be Cleopatra's favorite cosmetic, and she was buried with a large vase of it for use in her afterlife.
 
When lapis was first introduced to Europe, it was called ultramarinum, which means beyond the sea. It was ground and used as the pigment painters used to paint the sea and the sky in many of their artworks until the nineteenth century.   The Romans believed that lapis was also a powerful aphrodisiac and in the Middle Ages, it was thought to keep the limbs healthy and free the soul from error, envy and fear.
